Can you smoke kratom? That’s the question. For most people who turn to kratom, there’s an almost cringeworthy thought. The truth? It’s a tough pill to swallow. No pun intended. The taste is just hard to stomach. Whether you swallow the pills or use the toss-and-wash method to use kratom, you’re probably wondering whether you can smoke it too.
Okay, so before I talk about whether you should smoke kratom, let’s look at what kratom is. For most who don’t quite know, kratom is a drug that stems from Southeast Asia. It comes from an evergreen tree in the coffee family called, Mitragynia Speciosa. It grows in tropical climates. Think rainforests. It doesn’t get much direct sunlight, but it does live in warm climates.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. You can just grow kratom yourself at home. Well, it’s not quite that easy. Even botanists can struggle with this. It’s tough to grow in a green house. The conditions need to be perfect. The soil needs to be moist enough but not too moist. The weather needs to be warm enough, but not too warm. The perfect amount of rainfall is needed. And nutrients for the soil. And I could go on and on and on.
There really is no point to trying to grow it yourself at this point. Currently, kratom doesn’t cost too much to buy. It’s pretty cost-effective, in fact. Especially when you compare its benefits to other prescription drugs such as pain killers and anti-anxiety medicine. Even methadone. Looking at all that, kratom is downright cheap to buy, especially in bulk.
Is It A Viable Option To Smoke Kratom?
Okay, if you’re wondering whether smoking kratom is a viable option, here’s a brief rundown. First, let’s look at how kratom works. It works when the alkaloids of kratom enter your bloodstream. That happens through digestion. They need to enter your bloodstream to reach your central nervous system. That’s where the receptor sites are located. If you don’t already know, kratom is a mu-opioid receptor agonist, meaning it activates that receptor.
That’s where all the so-called magic happens. Now, when you decide to smoke kratom, things get a bit iffy. First of all, you need to smoke a lot more kratom than you would typically ingest to get similar effects. For example, you might use 2 grams of kratom with a toss-and-wash method while you’d have to smoke roughly 20 grams to feel that same “high,” so to speak. It’s tougher to get those alkaloids into your bloodstream. It’s not like THC, which is the active compound in marijuana.
For all intents and purposes, kratom was never meant to be smoked. Kratom was meant to be eaten or swallowed. For centuries, it’s worked that way. In fact, indigenous tribes in Southeast Asia have been chewing on kratom leaves for hundreds of years now. That’s the primary way to get kratom into your system. Not by smoking it. By ingesting it. So, it is a viable option to smoke kratom? Sure, if you want to smoke a considerable amount of it.
When you compare it to cigarettes, for example, where the tobacco has a high concentration of nicotine, the active alkaloids in kratom don’t even come close to that. That’s why tobacco can be smoked. There’s a substantial concentration of nicotine there in comparison to the compound as a whole. Not in kratom. So if you do smoke kratom, be prepared to smoke dozens of grams of it in order to feel that so-called kratom high.
What Happens When You Smoke Kratom?
Okay, if you’re still hellbent on smoking kratom, here’s what happens when you decide to do that. Keep in mind for a moment that the viability of the two primary alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are very low. They don’t last long, so you need to get as much of it into your system in a short period as possible. That’s why ingesting works well. But, when it comes to smoking kratom, that means you have to smoke all 20 to 25 grams of it within the hour.
Now, that’s a lot of kratom to smoke. Even if you’re a skilled “smoker” of sorts, smoking 20 to 25 grams within one hour is too much for just about anyone. So why try it? Plus, there are all sorts of negative consequences to doing this. For example, there’s a ton of tar on the kratom leaf that, when smoked, is going to have potentially catastrophic health effects. We’re not just talking about the regular side effects that can happen when you use kratom. We’re talking about way more.
Yes, tobacco also has tar. But as you know, tobacco causes cancer and kills. Why smoke kratom when you run a similar risk? Even if you attempt to smoke kratom extract, you’re going to run serious health risks. Yes, you need to smoke less of that to attain similar effects to ingesting it, but it’s just not worth the drawbacks. Many people use kratom for its medicinal properties. But smoking it would just take away from that. So it’s not worthwhile no matter how you slice it.
How Should You Use Kratom?
Okay, so it’s clear that smoking kratom really isn’t that beneficial. But there are many other ways that people use kratom. Some decide to make kratom tea. Others make smoothies from kratom. Others combine it into soups and fruit juices. Then, some simply take the extract in liquid form or use the toss-and-wash method. And, there’s always the tried and true method of taking kratom capsules.
Really, the choice is up to you. If you’re acclimated to swallowing pre-filled capsules, that might be the best bet. It’s clean and effective. But you need to swallow a lot of them to have an impact. We’re talking about 8 to 12 of those each time you use it. If that’s something you’re okay with, then by all means, go for it. You could also go out there and buy kratom powder. When you buy the powder, you can fill your own capsules. It’s not as effective, but most people wouldn’t have it any other way.
Some will prefer to purchase the right size and type of capsules they prefer, and then cap those pills themselves. They can control the quality and ensure the freshness of the kratom. Keep in mind that kratom will only stay fresh for a short period once it’s turned into a powder. So you have to use it rather quickly. There is a fast degradation of the alkaloids when it’s not used right away. This is also seen in the seeds that fall from the plant. They can only germinate for a couple of days after they leave the parent tree.
Of course, all of these are better options than smoking kratom to begin with. If you decide to smoke it, you will run a number of risks that will likely offset any of the benefits you would get from taking kratom. You won’t feel that euphoric effect and you likely won’t feel the analgesic effect either. Unless, of course, you’re able to smoke 20 to 25 grams of kratom within roughly an hour, that is. But why subject yourself to that? It’s just not worth it.
